Up for sale is this WW2 Japanese dagger/dirk with scabbard. Authors Richard Fuller and Ron Gregory created a book in 1986 called Military Swords of Japan. In this book, they describe this dirk as a "standard 1883 commissioned officer's dirk' (see pictures for more historical information on this weapon). I acquired it from an estate in Virginia. The woman who sold me this said that her father served in the Pacific during WW2 and obtained it after a battle. It has been stored in her home for many years and has been very well preserved. Most importantly, it looks like it was not played with at all.This weapon is exactly as found, the pommel cap is tight, the brass wrap is excellent, the skin beneath is excellent, the guard is tight, the brass over base of blade has scratches but is also tight. Blade is tight, edge is smooth , point is excellent, blade itself must be carbon steel as it has random specks of discoloration as commonly found on such steel. Scabbard fits snug and clicks closed as expected, material on sheath is excellent, brass decorations are excellent, both mounting rings are good.Someone at some time may have tried to clean the brass...a small amount of what seems to be Brasso remain under blade guard in the grooves there...not something easy to notice. There is no other sign that I can see where anyone has attempted anything like "restoration"Overall, while not perfect, the condition is great and I have been displaying it in my office for a few years as a conversation starter. Over the past 80 years this dirk has been very well preserved, as mentioned there are signs that it has been maybe cleaned and maybe seen some wear. Measurements are approximate in inches: 15 3/4 overall end to end, blade: 8 3/4, handle: 4 inches When I compare it to other dirks on that are for sale, this is far and above better quality thus the reasoning for the price.
