Genuine period jacket as worn by an Royal Air Force bomber crew observer who served during the Second World War. The original owner was also a veteran of the First World War and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for gallantry while flying in active operations against the enemy.
An observer\'s role was to navigate the aircraft to the target using astral navigation, map reading and wireless fixed positions, and once over the target release the bombs. The observer trade was phased out and replaced by the two new trades of navigator and bomb aimer; however those who qualified as an observer could still wear their observer brevet throughout the war.
The jacket is in overall original clean condition; however, there are a number of moth holes and wear in areas (see pictures). These do not detract from the overall appearance and the jacket still displays very well.
Made from all natural fibres and features: brass George VI King\'s crown RAF buttons, warrant officer rank patches to each sleeve, observer brevet wing patch and medal ribbons to the chest for the Distinguished Flying Cross, 1914-1918 British War Medal, 1914-18 Victory Medal and Royal Air Force Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
