The RoyalYugoslav Air Force was established on the basis of Serbian Military AirService, one of the earliest air forces in existence and one of the first toengage in battle (during the Balkan Wars of 1912 to 1913). The Serbian AirService survived occupation by Austria-Hungary by being based in exile inneutral Greece during World War I where its pilots served and trained with thehelp of the French Air Force. In 1918, Serbia lead the creation of a unitedYugoslavian state together with former Austria-Hungary territories in theBalkans. then called the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.

RoyalYugoslav Air Force operated from 1918 to 1941 and at the start of World War Twowas equipped with a large number of modern combat aircraft from numerousnations which were purchased directly and licence-built. These included BristolBlenheim I (61), Dornier DO-17K (69) and Savoia-Marchetti SM.79K (40) bombersand fighters such as the Hawker Hurricane I (47), Messerschmitt Bf-109E-3 (73)and the then relatively new, home-grown Rogožarski IK-3 (11 with more underconstruction).

In 1923,the government of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia began to modernize its air forceand established contracts within the country and abroad which contributed totheir large variety of aircraft in service at the time of World War II. In1923, the government consolidated the bureaucracy for the air force by joiningthe Aviation Command with the Ministry of War and Marine.

In that timeYugoslavia did send their pilots to Great Britain on training, that’s wherethis Headgear came from with RAF goggles.

During 1940 Britain supplied significant military aid to the JKRV, tostrengthen its forces against the increasing German threat. In early March1941, the German Luftwaffe forces started arriving in neighboring Bulgaria. OnMarch 12, 1941, JKRV units began to deploy to their wartime airfields. Theoverthrow of the pro-German government in Belgrade on March 27 brought an endto hopes of a settlement with Germany. On April 6, 1941, Luftwaffe units inBulgaria and Romania attacked Yugoslavia in what was known as the Bombing ofBelgrade. Equipped with a combination of obsolete equipment and new aircraftstill being introduced into service, the JKRV was forced to defend thecountry\'s long borders against multiple attacks from many directions. Thedubious loyalty of some military personnel did not help matters. Yugoslavfighter aircraft and anti-aircraft artillery brought down about 90-100 enemyaircraft, but defending forces were unable to make any significant impact onthe enemy advance. During the attack German aircrafts on Niš Airport Medoševac,6 April around 08:00, with the fire from the ground shot down plane was Germanfighter ace Herbert Ihlefeld. Captain Ilefeld, who them to the beginning of theattack on Yugoslavia was recognized over forty air victories, Captain Ihlefeldwas shot down by Corporal Vlasta Belić, fire a machine gun Darn, caliber 7.69mm who are taken down with aircraft Yugoslav Breguet 19. Having received a shotin the nose of oil cooler, engine Messerschmitt Me -109 are stop and the pilotwas forced to leave the plane. He rescue themself the parachutes about 35 milessoutheast of Nis. German ace was captured by Serbian peasants who handed himover to the gendarmes. On April 17, 1941 the Yugoslav government surrendered.Several JKRV aircraft escaped to Egypt via the Kingdom of Greece, and the crewsthen served with the British Royal Air Force (RAF).On historical photo you cansee King Peter II of Yugoslavia after receiving his RAF wings from Air ChiefMarshal Sir Sholto Douglas, Cairo, Egypt 1944.
