This is what I believe to be an original pairing of a WW1 era Black Starr & Frost sterling picture frame and a Edwin E. Codman Bronze relief made for a United States military personnel. Likely an officer or general given the fact that the frame is made to sit upon a desk and the materials and quality involved.
Black Starr & Frost were operating under that name from 1876-1929 when they were bought by Gorham.Edwin E. Codman (1876-1955) Studied under the Gorham apprenticeship program during his childhood and his and his father\'s business was purchased by Gorham in 1905.Given the similar time frame and both companies close association with Gorham I believe these pieces were commissioned together for the same customer.The frame (without glass or velvet) weighs 54 grams. It measures 6 inches by 4 1/4 inches. One corner has damage likely from being dropped and the easel back ribbon has come apart making it difficult to stand on it\'s own.The eagle motif is not marked however it has wear consistent with gold plating over sterlingThe bronze relief weighs 126 grams and is Marked E.E. Codman and has the inscription of \"Janet\" at the base .The glass has flea bites along the edges and corners however the damage is not apparent when the frame is put together.
I have reached out to the company that purchased Black Starr & Frost in 2006 to determine if the two pieces were in fact made together but unfortunately they did not acquire records from that era however the response I got did confirm that this frame is from the WW1 era
