This medal isn’t an official one, its a medal given on Serbia Day (25June 1916), for contributions to the charitable relief fund for Serb refugeesset up following the invasion and over-running of Serbia by Austrian andBulgarian forces in 1915. The face shows a Serbian double-headed eagle with the inscription“JOURNEE SERBE” below, bearing a circular crowned medallion with the heads ofKing Peter I and Crown Prince Alexander facing right, circumscribed “PIERRE IALEXANDRE”, a plaque below inscribed “GLORIEUX DEFENSEURS DE LA LIBERTE SERBE1914-1915” (Glorious Defenders of Serbian Liberty 1914-1915) with the same textin Serbian, signed “TSM LORDONNOIS GRAVEUR EDIT”. The reverse shows a Serbian double-headed eagle inscribed “1916” below,bearing a circular crowned medallion with the arms of the Allied nations withina ring inscribed “GLOIRE AUX INTREPIDES HEROS SERBES” (Glory to the intrepidSerb heroes), and a ribbon at the crown inscribed “SECOURS NATIONAL” (nationalrelief). Such medals were called “Médailles de journée” (Day Medals) and dozensof them were produced in France. They were produced with very differentmaterials (metal, cardboard, paper, etc.) and had very different shapes. A verynice theme for a collection!
