WW1 Austrian Double Bravery, Iron Cross Red Cross Medal Group 100% Genuine
The first two Medals Are:-
The Austrian Silver and Bronze Bravery Medals with additional award bars (representing 4 awards for bravery) - Awarded to non-commissioned officers and other ranks for a deed of bravery in war. This medal was instituted on the 19th July 1789 in 3 classes : the Gold Medal, the Large Silver Medal (also called 1st Class Silver Medal) and the Small Silver Medal (2nd Class Silver Medal). On the 14th February 1915 a Bronze Medal (50% bronze, 50% gunmetal) was added. During the 1st World War two types of the "Tapferkeits- Medaille" were issued : a first type bearing, on the obverse, the bust of Emperor Franz Joseph I with the text "FRANZ JOSEPH I V.G.G. KAISER V. OESTERREICH" (Franz Joseph I, by the grace of God, Emperor of Austria) and on the reverse, within a laurel wreath with crossed flags at the bottom, the words "DER / TAPFERKEIT" (For Bravery, in German) and a second type, issued after Franz Joseph's death in November 1916, bearing, on the obverse, the bust of Emperor Karl with the text "CAROLVaS D.G. IMP. AVST. REX BOH. ETC. ET REX APOST. HVNG." (Karl, by the grace of God, Emperor of Austria, King of Bohemia etc. and Apostolic King of Hungary). The reverse is similar to the first type but for the word "FORTITVDINI" (For Bravery, in Latin). On the 29th November 1915 bars, trapeze form and in rustless iron, were installed for subsequent awards of the same class. An order of the 15th September 1917 made officers also eligible, under special conditions, for the Gold or Silver Classes and in those cases a gilt or silver "K" was affixed to the ribbon. By mid March 1918 the Vienna Mint had struck, during the war, some 950,000 bronze, 384,000 small silver 2nd Class, 143,000 large silver and 3,700 gold medals.
The Remaining Medals are :-
The Austrian Iron Cross of Merit - The Iron Cross for Merit (Eisernes Verdienstkreuz) was awarded to civilians and soldiers of lower ranks for outstanding acts and services during WW1. This cross was instituted on 1st April 1916 in two grades, with and without the Imperial Crown, the later being the lower class. The obverse side shows the monogram for Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria (1830-1916) and encircled by a boarder containing the words VIRIBUS UNITIS (roughly translates as ‘Unity through Strength’)
The Austrian Karl Truppenkreig Cross - The Karl Troop Cross (German: Karl-Truppenkreuz) was instituted on the 13th December 1916 by Emperor Karl I of Austria-Hungary. The cross was awarded until the end of the First World War to soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian Army, regardless of rank, who had been with a combatant unit for at least twelve weeks and who had actually served at the front.
The Honour Cross with Swords - The Honour Cross of the World War 1914/1918, commonly, but incorrectly, known as the Hindenburg Cross was established by Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, President of the German Republic, by an order dated the 13th July 1934, to commemorate the distinguished deeds of the German people during the First World War.The Bulgarian Royal Order for Military Merit, VI class - The order was founded by a Knyaz (Princely) Order dated 18th May 1900 ‘as a sign of particular recognition to our brave army’ and was an extension of the Order for Civil Merit to the military. (It is for this reason that the order bears the date of the founding of the latter order rather than its own). The order had six classes and the 6th class, as in the example here, was awarded to company and section commanders up to the rank of Captain, to non-commissioned officers, volunteers from the war of 1885 with Serbia, the Balkan Wars of 1912-13 and in World War I, 1915-1918. This example dates from the period of King Ferdinand I, after the declaration of the Kingdom in 1908, and thus from 1908 to 1918, and was most likely awarded during the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913 or World War I, 1915-1918.
The Austrian (General) War Service Medal 1873 - On his 25th Jubilee, in December 1873, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria instituted the 'Kriegsmedaille' (War Medal). The medal shows on the obverse the Emperor's head surrounded by a laurel wreath and on the reverse the date '2.December 1873' (those showing the spelling Dezember where produced after 1900). It was suspended from a ribbon in the Habsburg colours of black and yellow. The medal was awarded to military personnel who had taken part in a least one action since 1848. Later the award of the medal was extended to military personnel who had taken part campaigns after 1873, until the Kaiser's death in November 1916.
The Austrian Fire Fighter Brigade Service 25 years Long Service Medal
The Austrian Red Cross Merit Award - The Austrian Red Cross was founded in 1864 and the merit awards were created to mark the 50th anniversary. This cross was awarded from 1914 to 1919.
The Austrian Balkan Wars Commemorative Cross for Mobilisation 1912-1913 - The medal was created in 1913 and awarded to those Austro-Hungarian forces that had been mobilised as a precautionary measure during the Balkan Wars between an alliance of Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro and Serbia on the one hand and Ottoman Turkey on the other. Austria did not intervene in the wars but they led to Turkey being largely thrown out of Europe and a much-strengthened of Serbia, making Austria more nervous of her Slav neighbour and laying the ground for the outbreak of World War I following the assassination of Archduke Franz-Ferdinand in Sarajevo on the 28th June 1914 and Austria’s declaration of war on Serbia on the 18th July 1914.
The Austrian Tyrol Province Remembrance Medal - The medal was instituted on the 7th February 1928 and awarded to all Tyroleans who served with Austro-Hungarian forces during World War I and to those who fought for the Austrians on Tyrolean soil during that war. The medal was awarded until March 1940. The fighting on the border between south Tyrol and Italy during World War I was some of the most difficult and spectacular, since it ran through some of the highest peaks of the Alps and the mountain terrain, cold, snow, avalanches and inaccessibility all made warfare extremely taxing. At the end of the war, South Tyrol was ceded to Italy, despite the majority of the population in the north of the area being of German origin. This issue rumbled on and gave rise to terrorist acts from the late 1950s until the late 1980s when the Italian Republic finally granted the area a degree of autonomy. The accession of Austria (and thus the rest of Tyrol) to the European Union in 1995 has served to strengthen cross-border relations and reduce the impact of the issue.UK Postage will be Special Delivery 24 Hr
