"WINGS OVER VIETNAM"

OUTSTANDING 8-DVDDOCUMENTARY SET ON VIETNAM WAR

WINGS OVER VIETNAM: DUST OFF - The courage and devotion to duty of hundreds of pilots and medics – combined with the speed and agility of the Huey Helicopter – were responsible for the treatment and transportation of casualties during the Vietnam War. Among the millions of casualties produced during the Vietnam War, more than 900,000 survived their injuries thanks to the uncommon dedication and bravery of this relatively small group of men known as "Dust Off". They flew the most dangerous missions in South Vietnam to evacuate wounded troops from the battlefield and keep them alive long enough to receive more thorough medical care. This is the incredible story of the men who volunteered to fly those missions – the dangers they faced, sacrifices they made, pain they suffered, and the lives they saved. (Approx. 45min.)

WINGS OVER VIETNAM: LINEBACKER II - In December of 1972, 10 years of American involvement in Vietnam was brought to a close in one fell swoop by a bombing campaign known as Linebacker II. U.S. President Richard M. Nixon felt the U.S. had played softball long enough with a government that repeatedly broke every peace accord they ever signed. In response to the games being played by the Vietnamese, Nixon ordered N. Vietnam's harbors to be mined and for 11 days straight American bombers, led by the awe-inspiring 70,000 lb. payload B-52, flew around-the-clock missions over North Vietnam, finally breaking their will to continue the most costly war in American history! (Approx. 45min.)

WINGS OVER VIETNAM: MiG KILLERS - Bristling with firepower and speed, American and North Vietnamese airmen go head-to-head in the skies over North Vietnam. The war pitted the fast and nimble Soviet MiGs against America's newest fighter jet - the F-4 Phantom. The elusive Soviet MiG fighters presented the most alarming challenge to U.S. air power in the skies over North Vietnam. America’s F-4 Phantom was driven to the limit by the hit-and-run tactics of North Vietnamese pilots and their deadly planes. Watch as Soviet MiG fighters challenge the United States' F-4 Phantom aircraft in split-second life-or-death standoffs in one of the most famous rouses in the history of air combat. See how a fiery new commander named Col. Robin Olds' "Operation Bolo" lures N. Vietnam's best pilots into an all-out dogfight as they're forced to finally engage American F-4 pilots in the skies over North Vietnam. (Approx. 45min.)

WINGS OVER VIETNAM: ROLLING THUNDER - American pilots flew thousands of bombing missions against North Vietnam while confronting the most formidable anti-aircraft defenses on Earth and while operating under the most complex and restrictive rules of engagement in history. For more than 3 1/2 years these brave pilots continued to fly into danger each day, with the hope they could help bring about an end to the deadly struggle which will ultimately claim millions of lives. This is the story of the pilots who flew those missions... it is the story of "Rolling Thunder". On March 7, 1965, American airmen began flying thousands of bombing missions against North Vietnam in the massive air campaign named "Rolling Thunder" which would last for more than 3 1/2 years. But the primary target, downtown Hanoi, was protected by the most formidable anti-aircraft defenses on Earth, and hundreds of pilots would be shot down, while hundreds more were imprisoned for years. Watch and listen as the actual pilots re-tell their harrowing flights into the jaws of death and back again, always hoping they would make it back one last time. (Approx. 45min.)

WINGS OVER VIETNAM: SPOOKIES, SPECTRES and SHADOWS - Benign aircraft have always proved useful for modification to the military. This proved especially true during the Vietnam War to meet the needs of unconventional warfare. Such benign aircraft as AC-47 and AC-130 cargo planes were modified into some of the most extraordinary and destructive weapon systems of all time as they are outfitted with Gatling guns and 20mm canons. The success of makeshift gunships such as the AC-47 “Spookies” led to the creation of more sophisticated and deadly airborne predators, such as the AC-130 “Spectre” - equipped with high-tech sensors and the most powerful weaponry ever assembled in an aircraft. Enjoy actual footage of attacks launched on the Ho Chi Minh trail as enemy vehicles are fired upon from out of reach of the enemy. (Approx. 45min.)

WINGS OVER VIETNAM: THE FACs - The ability of fighter bomber crews to differentiate between friend and foe, in order to independently provide close-in air support, proved to be extremely difficult in the vast jungles and rice patties of Vietnam. Firefights often broke out at close range between small American patrols that became intermingled with the elusive Viet Cong beneath dense, triple-canopy jungle. An elusive enemy, jungle terrain, and a lack of fixed battle lines severely hampered air-to-ground operations in Southeast Asia. To combat this, an elite group of pilots known as Forward Air Controllers, or FACs as they were known, patrolled the countryside in lightweight, unarmed aircraft. These pilots risked their lives daily to pinpoint enemy positions and mark them with target-marking rockets. Once that was completed, they were often called-upon to loiter overhead and direct follow-up air strikes. To help cut through the fog of war, hundreds of FACs scoured the countryside assisting both men on the ground and fighter bomber crews alike. Few air combat missions could be as dangerous, demanding and potentially heart-breaking as the missions of Forward Air Controllers in Vietnam. It was the FACs' mission was to quickly make sense of the situation from above, and to call in air strikes in support of the men below - a job he had to do with nothing more than a few radios, a few target-marking rockets, and a lot of guts. It took a lot of intestinal fortitude to climb into a slow-moving, non-armored plane and fly low altitude missions over enemy territory, and these were the men that did it - knowing full well if they were ever shot down and captured they would not be taken captive. (Approx. 45min.)

WINGS OVER VIETNAM: THE JOLLY GREENS - The brave crews of the Jolly Greens lived their motto "that others may live" by routinely risking their own lives, repeatedly hovering into heavily-defended jungle terrain to pluck fallen comrades and pilots from the clutches of North Vietnamese troops. Sadly, all too many Jolly Green crewman did in fact lose their life in attempts to save their fallen comrades. Watch as many of these stories are retold and hear the life and death stories of men who gave their all so "that others may live". (Approx. 45min.)

WINGS OVER VIETNAM: WILD WEASELS - U.S. pilots flying strike raids against Vietnam during the Vietnam War were forced to contend with a new and lethal threat – the Soviet-built SA-2 surface-to-air missile, or "SAM". But it wasn't long before this new weapon's strength would become it's weakness. In order to launch the SAM, the SAM missile sight had to first lock-onto the American plane using a radar signal. To combat this new weapon, U.S. forces assembled a new breed of aviators and aircraft assigned the task of destroying these enemy missile sites. These aviators and aircraft known as the "Wild Weasels" were asked to fly the most dangerous flying missions in Vietnam. Wild Weasel pilots would fly ahead of other aircraft, exposing themselves to enemy radar lock-on, in order to launch the counter-measure Shrike Missile they carried. The "Shrike" used that same enemy radar-lock to lock onto itself and guide itself towards the enemy ground base and destroy it, thereby clearing the way for their fellow pilots flying strike missions into Vietnam. Ride in the cockpit with these brave men – "the first in and last out", as they decide in a split-second to fire their missiles before the enemy can fire back. (Approx. 45min.)
