WHITE MTS. PROFILE LAKE, PROFILE FRANCONIA NOTCH, NEW HAMPSHIRE, 1907 - 1909:
$11.99

Profile Lake is a 13-acre water body located in Franconia Notch in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, at the foot of Cannon Mountain. The lake was given its name due to its location directly beneath the Old Man of the Mountain, a famous rock formation which collapsed in 2003. The lake is near the height of land in in the Franconia Notch. The lake’s outlet is the Pemigewasset River, which flows south to the Merrimack River and ultimately the Gulf of Maine at Newburyport, Massachusetts. The Notch is a major mountain pass through the White Mountains. Dominated by Cannon Mountain to the west and Mount Lafayette to the east, it lies principally within Franconia Notch State Park and is traversed by the Franconia Notch Parkway. It is located primarily in the town of Franconia but extends south into Lincoln. This is a “Hugh Leighton Co.” card that captures the Lake and Profile with a group of people on the lake edge, and one in the boat. “Hugh Leighton was a printer and major publisher of national view-cards, especially scenes of New England from Portland Maine between 1907-1909. They printed most of their cards in four distinct styles usually employing tinted halftones. Most of their cards had a subdued by recognizable pallet. Some of their cards were printed at their own plant but most were printed in Germany. They merged with Valentine & Sons in 1909. Leighton is known for tinted halftones with a subdued and recognizable pallet. The card is not post marked but we can date it between 1907 and 1909. It is in good condition with minor wear and a nice, clean, clear image. The reverse has album paper stuck to it but other than that is clean.
The colors on the images are a more neutral B&W than the scan.Unless otherwisenoted, I use Wikipedia and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible. Corrections appreciated.
