West Chester is a borough and the county seat of ChesterCounty, in the state of Pennsylvania. Located within the Philadelphiametropolitan area, the borough had a population of 18,461 at the lastcensus. West Chester has been theseat of government in Chester County since 1786 when the seat was movedfrom nearby Chester in what is now Delaware County. The borough was incorporated in 1799.

Friends Meeting Houses are places ofworship for the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers. A “meeting” is the equivalent of achurch congregation, and a “meeting house” is the equivalent of a churchbuilding. Several Friends meetingswere founded in Pennsylvania in the early 1680s. The Merion Friends Meeting is the onlysurviving meeting house constructed before 1700. Thirty-two surviving Pennsylvaniameeting houses were constructed before 1800 and are listed individually on the NationalRegister of Historic Places or as contributing properties in historicdistricts. More than one hundred meetinghouses constructed before 1900 were documented by the Historic American BuildingsSurvey and published in “Silent Witness: Quaker Meeting Houses in theDelaware Valley, 1695 to the Present” (2002).

One of the key tenets of the ReligiousSociety of Friends is pacifism adherence to the Peace Testimony. In 1827, the Great Separation divided PennsylvaniaQuakers into two branches, Orthodox and Hicksite. Many individual meetings also separated, butone branch generally kept possession of the meeting house. The West Chester House was listed as being Hicksite. The two branches reunited in the 1950s.

The “WestChester Meeting House” was founded and built in 1810 at 425 N. High andis still listed as a meeting house at the same location. It is also on this card, postmarked 1910 in WestChester.
