Logging was one of the major industries that helpedput Washington on the map and spurred the economy from its territorialdays, into statehood and for many decades afterward. Many Washingtoncommunities especially in the timber-laden western half of the state, owe theirearly existence to logging and related activities.The California Gold Rushexposed the need for a steady, good supply of lumber. Starting in the 1850s,the area around the Puget Sound served this need. For a hundred years,no other industry came close to matching logging in its importance to Washington. Huge trees filled the coastal forest, and no one thought the supply would everrun out. Large Douglas Firs, Spruce, Hemlock,and Cedar trees grew west of the Cascade Range. Some firs grewover 300 feet tall, and some cedars reached 15 feet in diameter. This card, published by “Sprouse and Son,Tacoma”, captures some of the giants cut into useable lumber, “WashingtonToothpicks”. It is in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clearimage. The reverse is written on and isclean.
