Offered is a beautiful vintage print, Le Cavalier a L’ Arc (C. 1375-1382), Chateau d’Angers, Galerie de l’Apocalypse. This is one of a set of six prints am offering up for purchase. See my store for the remaining five.

The Apocalypse Tapestry is a large set of medieval tapestries commissioned by Louis l, The Duke of Anjou between 1377 and 1382. The Tapestry depicts the story of the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelation by Saint John the Divine. The full Tapestry currently hangs in the Chateau d’Angers. The print is professionally framed. On the verso is identification of the tapestry and chapter it depicts from the Book of revelation. Attached on one print verso is the ticket to the Chateau D’Angers leading me to believe that the prints were purchased at the time of the visit to the Chateau I am guessing, based on provenance of ticket and framer info around the 1960’s

There are 200 million in the text, but only six here. They massacre a third of humanity symbolized by seven people crushed under the invaders' hooves.

This simplification does not exclude attention to detail. Thus the representation of the mounts on this scene is consistent with the text of the Apocalypse “and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions and from their mouths came fire, smoke, sulfur. (…) For the power of these horses is in their mouths and in their tails, because their tails are like serpents and they have heads with which they hurt.”

These riders, despite this fantastic description, are also very representative of the soldiers of the 14th century and perhaps even of the English army, enemy of the French. We are in fact in the middle of the Hundred Years' War at the time of the creation of the tapestry.

We see on this scene a rider in armor, a cutler; the only unarmed individual is probably a valet or a page. One of the characters seems to be a mercenary from the East. He is armed with a large saber with a curved blade and wears a very strange headdress.

A soldier on the right wears a helmet domed in the middle with the edges raised at the front, and holds a large spear. Riding in the front line, another soldier whose helmet is decorated with two pheasant feathers, then a figure dressed in orange, with iron-gloved hands, wearing a turban.

In the center of the image is a superb rider whose armor is particularly detailed: chain mail, helmet, leggings, articulated gauntlets, solerets. His shield has a notch intended to receive his long spear which ends in a very sharp diamond-shaped metal piece. The rider carries at his waist a small dagger and a sword of which only the hilt is visible. Finally, his helmet, whose visor is raised, is topped with a white ostrich feather.
