These thick wooden letters stood above a revolving door in the famous Goldblatt's Department Store in Gary, Indiana. Goldblatt's was a huge four store department store with an additional basement level. You could buy clothes, shoes, household items, deli meats, candy, toys and almost anything useful for the family. They were bins and bargains to had daily and huge displays at Christmas time. The Goldblatt's chain was founded in 1914 and the store was bustling until Gary's gradual downtown demise. When the store closed

(I981) I came home from college determined to get these letters (that I remembered standing freestyle a with only the bottoms attachedto a wooden strip )above the revolving door. The store was already empty and closed for good but somehow I got the attentionof a man working inside. He let me in and explained he was the elevator operator (the elevator was not automatic but was operated manually in part ). I told him I was a theater major and wanted to buy the wooden letters I'd long admired. He found a ladder and even took them down for me. The letters are solid wood, 5.5 inches high and have remnants of paint left which can be easily stripped or sanded. They are in very good condition (see detailed photos).
