I bought this photo at an old time flea market, set in a wooded glen, a place I\'ve been going on rare occasions for damn near 50 years. I like being stopped in my tracks, and this photo in a box of miscellaneous pictures did just that. I held it and looked into it for a long time, but I saw and understood where I was going with it immediately. The composition we consciously strove for is what the photographer had in mind when he or she posed the gals originally. To the ambulance squad women on the far left who were ultimately cropped from the final layout here in our studio, I apologize,

That said, what we have is a real moment now rewrapped and opened up like a special gift. You are there. Please get in real tight and have a look.

This is a moment showing all of the folks herein filled with quiet purpose and yet... there is some excitement not yet tempered by the hard reality of war and buoyed by the natural energy of youth. We are at the very beginning of WWII, and these gals have been training stateside as Civil Defense nurses, ultimately for deployment in any direction around the globe. It will be a rough road. All of those elements, as well as the vintage vehicles, makes this one of my favorite and certainly one of the most quietly compelling images in our collection.
