Vintage Solid Oak Machinist Chest--George Scherr Co, NY- w/ Excelsior Latches:

This is an antique Oak Machinist Chest made bythe George ScherrCompanythat closely resembles a Model 042 Chest made by the Gerstner Company. But, there is no hardware onthe chest that is stamped with the name, Gerstner, nor is there any other informationidentifying amaker of this particular chest. Thelatches have the name \'Excelsior\' instead. (The Excelsior Company began in the late 1800\'s in Stamford, Conn, and is known for its chest locks and latches, but we have no information that indicates they made machinist chests like this one... At first weguessed that it might be an early Gerstner and they used Excelsior hardware on it. But luckily, we wereinformed by an expert that it is a product made by theGeorge Scherr Company of New York, NY. They made machinist chests from 1941-1950 and this one of them.)
As thephotos show, it is well used and missing some of the small side, and all of the lower, drawers. Old nail holes appear to have held guides for three missing lower drawers. We noticed a drying crack on the top, a few small missing pieces of wood, worn and very dirty felt lining, arepair on the front panel on the side, the handle missing the leather outer cover, some portions of the oak grain appear to once have been painted although most do not, and the metal braces and latches are all somewhat corroded and rusted a bit. Plus the lock is missing. To restore it would be aproject but wethought someone might enjoy a good project and end up with a very nice chest with lots ofcharacter andhistory. (You would just have to make up the history as we have none.)
It measures 20 x 16.5 x 9.25 inches which matches one of the Scherr Chests perfectly. (We have a couple of photos of that matching Scherr Chest and would be happy to share them and try to answer any questions youmighthave.) It weighs 20 pounds but we have shipping optionsthatweshould be able toship it safely within the U.S. for $30.00 or less. Look itover and see what you think. Our pricing is a guess but ones in good shape sell for a great deal more. We accept returns but would expect a buyer tocover return costs on this beast.
