Not wanting to mis-describe an item, I have asked ten people (6 guys and 4 gals) to tell me what this item was, with seven not even hesitating in the least to tell me it was a girl playing basketball. Two came around to that conclusion, but one continues to believe it is a girl model. But all ten believe the item is an ashtray because of the four cigarette holders on the four corners. So that\'s what I decided to call it...a basketball girl\'s ashtray. I believe the viewer will agree: what a unique item this is. I have had the item over 40 years myself, and I got it from from an old West Texas antique store.
For sure this is an eye-catching piece, for the girl is very attractive. She is sitting on a large ball, and she appears to be wearing a tight-fitting or form-fitting basketball uniform (or some type of uniform), but she has on a bracelet of some type, and those are no sneakers she is wearing on her feet.
It was difficult for me to believe an ashtray would be made to extinguish a cigarette on the image itself; it looks like there would be a clear square-cut glass to fit over the image to hold the ashes and cigarette butt. However, the image is a square, and only 3.5 inches per a side. I\'m not even too sure what the composition of the art object itself is. Perhaps pressed wood of some type? I just do not know.
A collector of tobacciana items will probably be attractive to this piece. The craftsmanship makes it sure to impress. Whether one plans to use this piece for its intended purpose (?) or simply display it as a decorative item, this ashtray is a great addition to any collection. Its country/region of manufacture is unknown, which adds to its mysterious charm. What a one-of-a-kind item!
All I do know is this: it is well over 40 years old; it appears to be a glassless ashtray; it is 3.5 inches per side; the girl is very shaply; there is a large ball involved; and, it is most definitely a conversation piece. If anyone in -Land is looking for exactly those characteristics, I have just the item for you. Come and get it!
