Vintage Schedel Porcelain Fish Puzzle Stein w/ Lithophane Nude @ Bottom Bavarian:
$64.50

Fantastic, fun, find! This 7 1/4" tall porcelain stein was made around the 1940's by the German company Schedel and at first look seems to be just a lovely stein decorated with transfer fish scene over a luster finish. The circumference of the body is visually and tactilely ribbed like an architectural column. Then, you will notice that there are holes sporadically around the top area and onto the lip that is shaped like a knobby branch, as is its' handle. And if you are not familiar with this type of stein, you think, "how do you drink out of this?". Well, it is meant to be a puzzle. You have to drink out of one hole in the lip where you actually suck the fluid out. I will be honest with you, it is not the easiest thing in the world to get the hang of, but I personally can tell you that it does work. My husband still does not believe me because he gave up quickly (sore loser) hee hee. Just as a disclosure, I don't suggest drinking out of it. That is because I cannot attest to how clean you could get the inside of the pottery of such a small hole. But do with it what you wish.

The other very interesting part of the stein is the lithophane at the bottom of the mug that measures 4 3/4" in diameter that is a small prize for finishing your favorite beverage. Please see pictures as it is an obvious bathing beauty that bring some festivity to what looks like a classy, unassuming piece of porcelain.

The colors blend beautifully together from sage green into warm, off white and then back to sage green again. The sea life surrounding the fish come in the same colors as the rest of the mug and bits of seaweed seem to be drifting off up and onto the lip. The embossed leaves that are within the ribbed area of the body are accented with a warm peach color. The whole piece is glazed with a luster finish and has no chips, cracks, or crazing. There is some wear of paint around the bottom rim. Marked Schedel on the bottom.
