Vintage SHOWA ERA Mixed Metal Figures Japanese Mythology of JO & UBA Takasago:

Vintage pair of heavy mixed metal figures from the Showa Period, Jo & Uba, Jo being 7 1/2\" tall and Uba 6 5/8\". Uba holds a broom and Jo holds a rake. Excellent condition for age, with some small signs of wear.
The legend of Jo & Uba, also known as the Spirits of the Pine Trees of Takasago and Sumiyoshi, is one of the oldest in Japanese Mythology/Folklore. The elderly couple, Jo and Uba, known together as Jotomba, are said to appear from the mist at Lake Takasago. The old woman, Uba, uses a broom to sweep away trouble, and Jo carries a rake to rake in good fortune. They have long been a symbol of a happy family life.
