APalekh lacquer boxis a remarkable piece of Russian artistry.The tradition ofPalekh lacquer boxesbegan in 1923 in the village of Palekh, located in the Ivanovo Oblast district of Russia.Palekh artists drew inspiration from real-life characters, works of literature, fairy tales, and songs.These miniature masterpieces are reminiscent of the ancient art of icon painting.Unlike oil paints, Palekh painters use their owntempera pigmentsmixed with egg yolk.The boxes are painted with bright colors against a black background.Elongated, graceful figures (similar to icons) are a hallmark of Palekh art.Elaborate gold and/or silver ornamentation, applied in fine lines, adorns the paintings.EachPalekh lacquer boxis created individually by artists who graduate from the village school.The artist signs each box, making it a unique work of art.Much like the icon painters of old, these boxes are painted withegg temperaand sometimes even include real powdered gold.
