This porcelain bowl is a pretty example of the Rose Medallion pattern. It has handpainted decorations in the pink, green and gold that define Rose Medallion. The flower in the pattern is actually a peony, the national flower of China! And the rose, in Rose Medallion and Rose Famille, refer to the rose color pink, not to the flower.

The bowl about 6 inches wide, 2 & 3/4 inches tall, holds 2 cups, and weighs 12 ounces.

I do not know WHEN it was made, but used google translate on the backstamp, and it means Hong Kong Industrial Port. The backstamp is on top of the glaze, so that probably means the porcelain blank was made elsewhere, probably China, and was decorated there in Hong Kong.

The bowl is in very good condition, with no chips, cracks, or crazing. There is a bit of wear to the top edge where there is gold trim, and there are a couple places where the edge is not as smooth, but the gold and red trim are painted on top of it.

Rose Medallion is a pattern decorating porcelain developed in the early 19th century, around 1820 for Chinese export mostly to America and Europe. Before 1890, porcelain from China could be unmarked, but starting in 1891 the US McKinley Tariff act required goods to be marked with where they were made, so pieces had “CHINA” in red. Later, after 1919, they were required to say “Made in China”. This piece, with no mark saying where it was made (in English) could mean it was made prior to 1890, or it could mean because it went through Hong Kong it missed that requirement. I am sharing my personal guesses, but they are just guesses, I am no expert! But I do spend some time researching, which I enjoy.
