Vintage Ormolu Filigree Footed Cherub Basket with Handle 7.25" Tall. Great condition. Flower on top of handle. Handle has an intricate design on it. 4 cherubs for the footed basket. Intricate filigree floral design. 7.25" in height, 4.5" in diameter, 5.5" wide at the widest part of the handle.
Ormolu is the gilding technique of applying finely ground, high-carat gold-mercury amalgam to an object of bronze, and objects finished in this way. The mercury is driven off in a kiln, leaving behind a gold coating. The term originally referred to a process in which powdered gold was mixed with mercury and used to gild metal. The term came from the French word "moulu", meaning "powdered gold". Craftsmen principally used ormolu for the decorative mountings of furniture, clocks, lighting devices, and porcelain.Filigree is a form of intricate metalwork used in jewelry and other small forms of metalwork.Ormolu filigree vanity sets and accessories were popular in the 1940s-1960s and were sold in department stores, drug stores, and jewelry stores. The ormolu pieces were in a Rococo style and featured romantic cherubs, birds, butterflies and scrolling. The intricate filigree featured stylized flowers like roses, and some featured a large, faceted jewels on the pieces. These items were made by companies such as Stylebuilt, Matson, Guildcrest, Globe Silver Company, Florenza, Yule Manufacturing Company, Astorloid, Sam Fink Company, Regent of London, Apollo Studios, and Mele.
