Wooden frame measures approximately 13 7/8 by 19 3/4 inches. Sand artwork measures approximately 11 3/8 by 17 1/4 inches, but appears to continue under the frame. Beautiful vintage Navajo Indian sand painting made by known artist and medicine man: Grey Squirrel / Fred Stevens, Jr. Handwritten summary, written by the artist, with the meaning of the artwork’s images is on back of board: Black Cloud Woman This is a Navajo Indian sand painting of the black cloud woman. Made during the four days, and five nights, curative ceremony called "The Male Shooting Way" chant. Her head dress is of the red horse hair, and eagle feathers. She wears two universal horns, with feathers. The face is banded with white dawn, black darkness, grey mist, and yellow twilight. White dots on her body, arms, and legs, are of the dew drops. The arm streamers, wrist bands, knee garters, sash, and kilt border are of the rainbows. Her moccasins are of the black mists, with red streaks, of the sunset rays. She carries a black hide rattle, with a rainbow bar, and feathers. Also a round basket, with feathers, and rainbow bars. A night rainbow garland, with feathers, surround the figure on three sides. This painting is all hand done, out of pulverized natural colored sand stones, silicon, and mineral rocks. By Grey Squirrel (Fred Stevens, Jr.) Navajo Indian Sandpainter and Medicine Man. Wooden frame has a clean, angular Mid-Century style. Sawtooth hardware on back allows piece to be displayed on a wall. Wood frame shows edge wear as seen in pictures.
