Vintage Miner\'s Lamp Eccles Protector Lamp Type 6. This is the less commonly found Re-lighter that would have been used by a Pit Deputy or Pit Official.
A solid and characterful old Miner\'s Lamp in good used condition full of character that saw a lifetime of work down the pit.
There is no doubt this was used many, many times the front Brass Plaque has rubbed away from years of hanging from a miner\'s belt.
These trusty old Miner\'s Lamps saved so many lives as they were used day in and day out.For a collector of mining memorabilia I think it is quite nice to have one that shows a lifetime of use.
Sold as seen needs the magnet to open it and then a light service to get it going again with a new striker.It has been beautifully cleaned to the exterior. There is no reason why it shouldn\'t be an easy job to get working if you want.
A fabulous display piece as part of a collection of mining memorabilia or just cottage decor.
The original sturdy hanging hook is intact to take the weight of this heavy lamp that would have attached to the miner\'s belt.
You can still make out some of the details on the front brass plaque, please refer to photos it would have read:

There is an \'R\' and what looks like a pit check or tally number \'A 771\' stamped on the lower rim refer to photos as it is a low number probably the number of the deputy or official who often stamped their numbers on the lamps.
The glass is uncracked and original and the interior gauze from what I can see appears to be in reasonable condition.
An interesting collector\'s piece if you have a connection to the mining industry in your past or are just a keen collector of this fascinating part of our heritage.

*These types of lamps were inuse up to the end of the deep mining industry. They could be used to detect twodifferent types of dangerous atmospheres. The first being firedamp, amixture of air and methane. Between 5% and 12% methane in air the atmosphere isexplosive. The flame in the lamp can detect down to 1¼% of Methane (a faintglow appears above the flame), if there is 2% of methane detected that part ofthe mine would be evacuated.

The second mine atmosphere itcould detect is known as blackdamp, air which is deficient in oxygen. If thelamp goes out for no reason their is a chance it is in an oxygen deficientatmosphere, normally present at about 21% in air, if oxygen drops below 15% inair serious symptoms can develop.
