This is a stunning brass Aztec Mayan low relief calendar that\'s made of brass with two bands of gorgeous inlaid abalone. It measures approximately 7 1/8\" in diameter and has hardware on the back for hanging. The back is stamped Mexico. It\'s in very nice condition with light wear consistent with age and storage.The Aztec calendar was based on the Mayan calendar and was used in the Valley of Mexico before the Aztec empire was destroyed.The Aztecs adapted the Mayan calendar to create their own system, which was simpler than the original.Both calendars had a 260-day ritual cycle and a 365-day civil cycle, but the Aztecs had two calendars while the Mayans had three.The Aztec calendar also incorporated symbols and images representing Aztec culture, gods, and natural elements.
