Vintage M H Mike Franklin Knife Owned by Warren Center T/C Thompson Center Arms:

The Maker: Accordingto the Arizona Custom Knives website, Mike Franklin (M. H. Franklin) beganmaking knives in 1969. He became a member of the Knifemaker’s Guild in 1973. Hehas been featured in many of the knife magazines throughout the years. Mikefounded “Hawg Knives” in the 1994 and produced many knives from his shop inAberdeen, OH. Mike is now retired and living in Florida, making knives only ona limited basis.

The Owner: I purchasedthis knife at sale at the 20th Anniversary gathering ofthe Thompson/Center Association in Sanford, Maine in 2005. According to ArtLamontagne, President of the Thompson Center Association, this knife (alongwith several other items saleed off at the gathering) was purchased from theWarren Center Estate Sale. On the front face of the knife it is inscribed “M. HFranklin Maker,” and on the back side someone (presumably Mr. Center himself)inscribed his name “W. Center.”

Of course,Mr. Center was the developer of the Thompson/Center “Contender” pistol, amongother things. I have enjoyed owning this knife for the past almost 20 years,and now I am affording the opportunity to someone else to own one of Mr.Warren Center’s personal knives (not one he made or produced, but one hepurchased made by Mike Franklin, and to also own a knife perhaps craftedearly on in Mr. Franklin’s knife-making career, for information on theweb indicates that he primarily crafted custom fixed blade knives in the 1970’sand began making custom folders in the 1980’s).

BLADES:One: Drop pointblade—3\" long.

BLADEMATERIAL: Unknown (Perhaps D-2 Tool Steel)

OAL: 6 3/4\"

LINERS: Some typeof red material (fiber or plastic) between the knife scales and the full tangand between the scales and the bolster.

PINS: StainlessSteel (four)

BOLSTERS: Unsure, butappears to be some type of “beveled” stainless steel, perhaps 416 SS like onsome of his other knives.

SPECIALFEATURES:It is a full-tang knife, having a tapered tang (very unique)toward the butt of the knife. It has a lanyard hole. There is a fingerindention on the lower front part of the handle as it meets the bolster. Thereare some thumb and finger serrations just in front of the bolster on both thetop and bottom of the knife. It has a hollow ground, mirror-polished blade.

YEAR OFMANUFACTURE:Unknown

CONDITION:New. Mint,or near Mint. The fit and finish on this knife is superb. It retains thefinish and original edge of the maker, showing no signs of having ever beenused, carried, or sharpened. I can identify no flaws in this knife.
