Vintage "Defeated Warrior" Japanese Fan, Noh Theater, Hand painted, Gorgeous:

This dramatic Japanese fan is identified as a Noh theater fan by its large size and characteristic shape. The hand-painted motif of the setting sun sinking into the foaming waves symbolizes a military defeat, such as that suffered by the young Heike noblemen in the Genpei War between the Taira and Minamoto clans. In a Noh play, a fan of this design would be carried by a warrior who was or will be defeated in battle in order to help the audience understand the archaic language of the play.
This is a bamboo fan with ten plain sticks. The double paper leaf is painted on a gold ground in shades of red, black, gray, and white. The reverse the same. The fan is 13" in length and 21" across when fully opened. It displays very well and would look amazing hung on a wall or on a bookshelf. This is part of a large collection of vintage and antique Japanese fans given to us to sell for the benefit of our library.
Excellent vintage condition. One small bump on edge of right guard leaf. Very slight wear on a couple of leaf edges.
