This vintage Japanese doll figurine depicts a traditional lion dancer, known as Shishi-Mai. The doll is a hand crafted folk art piece made in the Wakasa region and represents the rich culture and history of Japan. The doll is approximately 7.5 inches tall counting the base and the doll alone is 7". The wood base measures 3 3/8" wide, 2 11/16" front to back and is 5/16" thick. It is painted in black lacquer. The lion dancer traditionally performed during the New Years Festival or Oshogatsu a culturally significant time in the Japanese calendar year. The open-mouthed lion is said to represent prosperity, success and good luck as well as driving away evil spirits. This costume style, worn during the Showa Era, is made of multi-colored and types of fabric with different patterns. The top of the costume is crepe fabric and the pants are cotton. Rice paper origami sashes accent the back of the pants. The lion's mask is made of wood and hand painted with black lacquer. The lion has gold teeth and eyes along with a red tongue and nostrils. The headdress is made of brown & white real feathers. The lion holds a vinyl and corded drum and has 2 wood drumsticks in his hands. On his feet he wears fabric and cord sandals. The piece is a stunning collectible for anyone interested in Japanese culture and Asian art. The doll wears traditional clothing, adding to its authenticity and uniqueness. It is in excellent, undamaged condition. The paper has some discoloration from age.
