Vintage Japanese Cotton Fireman Kimono Coat Hikeshibanten Firefighter Jacket Mingei

I acquired this Vintage Japanese Fireman Coat, back in 1982 from a collector of Mingei fabrics and workwear, and displayed it on the wall with a bamboo pole in my studio for design inspiration.

“Fireman\'s gear from the Edo and Meiji Periods were not flame proof like today. Instead to keep the fire fighters from catching alight, the multiple layers of cotton that the Japanese firemen\'s coats were composed of, would be drenched with water in the hopes that any drifting ember would not cause damage to the firemen\'s coat, also known as aHikeshibanten Firefighter Jacket.”

This jacket is made of a thick cotton weave and hand-dyed deep indigo, red on white. No other provenance available. The coat is in very good overall condition except for two small snags on the front left sleeve. It is sized XL by Japanese standards.

Measurements are:

• armpit to armpit 24 1/2\"

• top of shoulder to bottom hem 33.5\"

• armpit to sleeve hem 14\"
