This Razor: This is a great19th century 13/16"+ frameback cutthroat straight razor made by Sheffield cutler, Joseph Rodgers & Sons. Rodgers was in the upper echelon of quality among the fantastic cutlers of 19th century Sheffield, England, and this blade is no exception, stamped with the proud declaration, "Cutlers to their Majesties, No 6 Norfolk Street, Sheffield," indicating their place of royal favor.The blade has some residual pitting...battle scars acquired in the service of generations of gentlemen.It has a classic, curved spine with a generously smiling bellied blade. It has understated brass pins and collars and a wedge made of blonde horn.
The Work:I refurbished this blade by unpinning it, removing all rust, carefully polishing it to a nice sheen. Some pitting remains,as I did not want to endanger the essence of the blade with over polishing. I made new scales for this razor from dark water buffalo horn with blonde buffalo horn wedge. Less visible are the brass washers I added to the pivot to enhance its already impressive longevity.
This razor has a nice old-school feel in the hand with nice balance. The size is perfect, in my opinion.This is a well made shaving instrument from one of the best Sheffield makers of all time. Still going strong, ready to serve several more generations!
I honed this razor with great care, as I would for my own razors I use for personal daily usethis razor was honed with the following progression with one layer of tape to protect the spine. My Story: I fell in love with vintage straight razors some years back when I became irritated with the exorbitant cost of disposable razor cartridges. I taught myself to refurbish antique straight razors, utilizing my background in jewelry and sculpture in learning to make custom razor scales, to pin them properly,and, through great effort and dedication, have gained a reputation for nicely honed shaving edges. Each of these blades is a journey, with a history. A man's hands created it long ago to last for generations. You and I are part of those generations. I try to be sensitive and cognizant of the historical context of each razor, as well as the spirit and intentions of the original blademaker so that I may bring them back to life for you, my customer.
