Vintage Hawaiian 1910 Ray Jerome Baker Grass House Kapiolani Park Hawaii Photo:
$499.00

Kanakajon\'s Mission: \"Spread the Aloha\"
Very Rare Vintage Framed Original1910 Ray Jerome Baker Photograph(not a reproduction!) of a Grass House in Kapiolani Park, near Makee Island and the present-dayKapahulu Avenue in Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii. This same photograph is featured in the historical Hawaiian photograph book entitled \"Hawaiian Yesterdays - Historical Photographs by Ray Jerome Baker\" (see page 197, as shown in the pictures), however the original piece for sale here is of a much higher quality and resolution than the copy in the book. Note: Original frame and photograph does NOT include glass, so there should be no accidents in shipping. You should insert museum-quality glass into the frame, to help preserve this historic Hawaiian treasure.
When Ray Jerome Baker came to Hawaii in 1908, his initial response to the picturesque beauty of the islands and a persisting Polynesian ambiance was a largely romantic one. His desire was to photograph Hawaii and its people \"for whatever aesthetic interest they might have,\" and his early images reflect a sharp sense of idyllic. He deeply loved everything about Hawaii and realized that his calling was to document change in the Islands. Few of the things he photographed have remained the same. People have gone, beautiful scenes have vanished and buildings have come down. When Ray Jerome Baker died in 1972, Hawaii lost one of its finest artists. He left behind a great legacy.
Ray Jerome Baker traveled around the United States and sold his photographs at shows (see excerpt from book \"Hawaiian Yesterdays\" below). This photograph was likely picked up at one of those events. The photograph is in very good condition and it is matted and framed (without the glass) measuring 15 x 18 inches. Without the frame it is approximately 10 x 13 inches.
Excerpt from \"Hawaiian Yesterdays\" -
\"During the late summer of 1919, Baker worked for the Midland Chautauqua Circuit, headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa. This company booked entertainment and lectures for the states of Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas. Baker traveled with a group called the American Ladies Quartet. They wore bright costumes and sang patriotic songs for the small-town audiences. Usually they performed in the late afternoon, accompanied by a piano, and set the stage for Baker\'s evening showing of lantern slides and motion pictures. Lecturing on Hawaii, Land of Heart\'s Desire, Baker was able to make $750 to $1,000 a month through his shows. The Oceanic Steamship Co. provided free passage between the mainland and Hawaii each summer, but all of his other expenses had to be covered by an admission charge of 50 cents. Baker stayed on the circuit for only two seasons. \"After 1920,\" he recalled, \"I did not attempt to renew my contract with the company, for it seemed to me that with the improvement of motion pictures, theaters, and highways, there was little promise for the future.\" Until 1935, Baker took movies of countless events that took place in Hawaii. For a number of years he maintained his own laboratory where he developed film and made prints for sale to libraries and collectors.\"
