I bought these at sale as I was drawn to the expressive faces of this lovely couple! I can only assume they were husband and wife around 1920-1940?
The photographs were taken by the renown Wrexham photographer, Algernon Smith! There are pieces of his work in the national collections in the UK and the national trust list many photos taken during his career.
I have spent a lot of time trying to identify this couple with no joy! I know a lot of the history of Wrexham as I feel they would have visited Algernons studio for these photographs?
A little research on Smith is:
James's daughter Winifred Mary had married Algernon William Smith in 1905 at Holywell. In 1911 they were living in 41 Regent Street, Wrexham, Algernon was 31 and a photographer. The Denbighshire Appeals were published on 13 October 1916, and Algernon was listed. Algernon Smith (37), photographer, 41 Regent Street, (passed for sedimentary work), December 30,
WINIFRED MARY SMITH died at Plas Derwen, Wrexham on 3 January 1961, she was buried with both sets of her grandparents. Creegans and Mackreth's. AlgernonW Smith died on 19 May 1968 at 37 Park Avenue, Wrexham. He had become one of Wrexham's most well-known photographer and died a wealthy man. His grave has not been found.
I found the pictures in these frames and thought about changes them as some of the veneer had chipped. But after a clean I decided the frames really suited the pictures so I replaced the damaged areas and polished them up. I am really pleased how they now look and happy I kept them authentic!
If anyone can identify the couple I would love to know!
They need to stay together and find a good home! I have replaced the tape on the back of both as the original had perished!
External measurement of the frames is 30x22cm approx.
