• DISCUSSION: Gorgeous, vintage 1970\'s, Stephen Fellerman iridescent paperweight. Decorated with an Iris flower centered on the top, four yellow/orange petals, trimmed in blue, on a complimentary multi-colored iridescent background. The base/pontil scar is ground flat, polished, and bears Fellerman\'s signature. He discontinued this style in the mid-1980s. It\'s even more beautiful in person! An excellent addition to your art glass collection, or a thoughtful gift for a special person! • DIMENSIONS: 2½\" wide (6.35 cm) x 2¼\" tall • WEIGHT: ¾-pound (315 g) • CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition! No damage. FULL CONDITION REPORT: We thoroughly inspected this piece and found that no cracks, chips, nicks, flakes, hairlines, significant scratches (located other than the weight-bearing base), repairs, stains, odors, residue, or signs of restoration could be seen or felt. Any natural indentations, bubbles, tool marks, carbon/ash deposits, and/or any other natural textural features are all original and normal for hand-blown glass. Wear to the base is normal and consistent with age. Please review all high-resolution photos, at full size, in forming your own opinions.

About the Artist
Stephen Fellerman grew up in New York and enrolled at Pratt where he took a ceramics class and experienced for the first time working with his hands. Upon graduation, in the summer of 1972, he bought a VW microbus and headed west. Stephen arrived in Sausalito to discover one of the most creative art centers in the country. Hanging out at a small glass studio (one of the few at the time), he watched others and absorbed a variety of techniques.
After a year in California, he returned east to Kent, Connecticut to open his studio, becoming one of the first studio glass artists to make a living from glassblowing. At the time, there were no craft shows or galleries exhibiting this type of work. But 1975 saw the advent of the American Crafts Council which held its first show in Rhinebeck New York. 400 exhibitors - and only three of us were glass blowers,\" Stephen recalled. Stephen specialized in Art Nouveau-inspired pieces, and his reputation grew. \"Over time I fill up my bag with tricks and techniques and eventually I take the techniques and start to express myself, instead of just doing the techniques I learned.\"
Stephen says he hopes to blow glass until his last breath. \"When I am in the studio, it is like I am in my own little kingdom. It is an incredible feeling. I can\'t think of anything else while I am doing it.\"

NO PAINTED ART GLASS HERE: None of our Murano or studio glass is painted! It is all colored using a chemical strategy that requires the addition to the \'melt\' of a wide variety of elements and compounds to produce the coloration. From the addition of pure gold, for red color, cobalt-oxide or cobalt-carbonate for deep blue, to neodymium-oxide for those \'alexandrite\' shifting pink-to-blue color effects. Sometimes salts or oxides are sprayed to the surface before reheating in the kiln to create iridescence and other special surface coloration that becomes a permanent part of the glass.
The alchemy of hot glass is a process that is part art, part chemistry, and part dance of muscle movement to achieve the complex works you see here. None of the techniques are learned quickly or easily, but take years of honing the formulas and skills of the glassblowing process. And, glassblowing is rarely done alone, but nearly always requires the teamwork of the gaffer\'s assistants to successfully produce this wonderful artwork!
