Vintage Czech crystal art glass engaved child tree vase Jindrich Tockstein 1942 DescriptionVintageCzech Bohemian rarecrystal art glass vase by Jindrich Tockstein with a wonderful hand engraved intaglio frost child and treeimage. A unique and irreplaceable vase and signed J.T 1942.This piecewas hand engraved by Tockstein, one of the foremost engravers of the period who influenced C20th glass design more than anyone of the era. Tockstein was born in 1914 and after graduating from the local glass school (1929-1932), enroled in the Prague University of Applied Arts under Joseph Drahonovskeho (1934-35). This he found restricting and returned to Zelezny Brod and taught himself. His first early pieces were produced for Rudolf Hlousek. His life was somewhat Bohemian in a literal manner, often working when he felt like it and often paid in beer and rum!
After the second war, he returned to The Prague Academy of fine arts under Pukl and Silovskybut again, left but this time due to his views on the oppressive communist regime. After 1949 he was an artist for the state run Zeleznobrodske Sklo where engravers such as Miroslav Platek and Ladislav Jezek realised his designs. His works were presented to many a foreign minister, state leaders and sporting winners. Many of his works can be seen in museums around the world.
