Paul Dickson\'s book \'Official Rules\' published in 1978 inspired this mug. \'Official Rules\', updated and republished multiple times,classifies & annotates laws, principles, rules, and bits of conventional wisdom to guide our lives. Paul Dickson is the author of more than 45 nonfiction books and hundreds of magazine articles. Although he has written on a variety of subjects from ice cream to kite flying to electronic warfare, he now concentrates on writing about the American language, baseball and 20th century history. His most recent titles include Drunk: The Definitive Drinker\'s Dictionary, The Dickson Baseball Dictionary, Sputnik: The Shock of the Century and Slang: A Topical Dictionary of Americanisms.

This 1983 Made in Japan Toscany Collection Coffee Mug is paired with a Made in the USA 1972 ‘Restaurant-ware’ saucer from Shenango. The paired Shenango China saucer helps bring simplicity and order. Produced by the Shanango China Co for the restaurant / hotel market, these bright white saucers with rolled edges for durability offers a clean and classic presentation without frills. The very definition of versatile. The 4 3/4\" coffee or tea saucer’s classic and clean look with a simple rolled edged give the saucer a contemporary feel. Shanango marketed these saucers to restaurants as a way to increase ambience at an affordable price. These dishes are microwave, dishwasher, and oven safe. Vitreous china gives these saucers extreme durability. Companies used vitreous china for the nearly indestructible restaurant ware of the 1930s through the 1970s, made by Syracuse, Walker, Buffalo, Alamo, Onondaga, Iroquois, Shenango, and others. Hotel china and railroad china were common forms of restaurant ware or vitreous china, decorated with advertising for the restaurant, hotel or for the railroad. Shenango China made vitreous china or restaurant ware in New Castle, Pennsylvania from the 1920s until the company was sold to Interpace in 1968. Interpace continued to make vitreous china under the Shenango name. The marks are stamped in black and include a coded manufacturing date. Per the book, “Made in the Twentieth Century: A Contemporary Guide to Collectibles”, Shenango China started date code system in 1943 with 1 indicating year. So 17 would by 1959. This saucers are stamped C-30 so believe it was manufactured in 1972.
