Snuff bottles in China were first produced in the early 1700s. They were used as containers to stash ground imported tobacco. Initially made for the emperor and the court, snuff bottles became more prevalent for the public when they started being produced in larger quantities. Highly functional and a symbol of status, the Qing dynasty craftspeople created lovely snuff bottles that conveniently allowed users to hold them comfortably in their palms and pockets. They soon became works of art and collector’s items.

This stunning jade snuff bottle is the typical size of 3 inches tall. Prized for its durability, jade is the most commonly used hardstone in Chinese sculpture. Considered a symbol of heaven, jade has healing properties and can be helpful in calming the mind and relieving stress.

It is intricately carved with a dragon in the front, and metal dragons on the sides. The stopper, with a jaded bead at the top has a very small spoon. The bottle is signed at the bottom.

The snuff bottle is in excellent condition. This is a beautiful addition to your Chinese craftsmanship collection.
