A little History on Incolay Studios on Lapis-blue collector\'s Plate
In the eighteen years since Incolay Studios of California discovered a way to translate the ancient art of cameo carving into a new medium, the Studios authority in the field of cameo art has been widely acknowledged. Incolay Studios has accumulate an extensive museum collection of cameo chalk impressions (many from classical sources) - one of the largest collections of authentic cameo carvings in the United States.
The objets d\'art hand-rafted by the Studio in Incolay Stone are regularly inspected by the Gemalogical Institute of America, closelylinking the Studio\'s considerable prestige to the authenticity, as well as the aestheticquality, of the limited-edition pieces produced.
The Voyage of Ulysses collection of the limited-edition plates is a benchmark Incolay series: the art of cameo carving reached a level of perfection in classical Greece that remains unsurpassed; the greatest number of the impressions displayed in the Incolay museum date from that period. The informed observer will, inevitable, compare \"The Land of the Phaeacians\" and subsequent Ulysses plates to the classical models.
For that reason, these plates are recognizable different from any previousIncolay series; indeed, the very material in which they are created is unlike any ever used for a collector\'s plate series before. The Voyage of Ulysses is the first Incolay plate series cast in lapis-blue-Incolay Stone, a unique combination of minerals deriving its hue and translucency fromthe basic substances comprising crystal quarts, cobalt oxide, and alumina.
The color was chosen not only to suggest the gem-like ornamental richness of the rare and costly stone, lapis lazuli, but also to capturethe luminous blue of the sun-kissed Aegean....what the poet Homer called \"the wine-dark sea\". Blue and white are colors of Greece; in \"The Land of the Phaeacians\" they recall the pristine gleam of marble against the dazzling blue of that unrivalled sea - much as Ulysses himself might have seen it when he touch the classic ports of call on his heroic voyage three thousand years ago.
