He received his design training at the Statens og Handverks-Kunstindustrimuseum Skole, from which Engo graduated in 1946. Throughout his artistic career Engo made impressive use of his education by becoming a furniture designer, studio enamelist, industrial designer, interior designer, fabric designer, and lighting designer. Perhaps he is best known for the colorful anodized aluminum bowls, plates, vases, trays, and other household utensils Engo designed for Emalox. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Engo focused on being a furniture designer for such companies as Gjovik Mobelindustri, Gustav Bahus, among others. But in 1953 Engo had turned his attention to creating modernist enamel-on-copper forms in his own studio. Pieces marked “Engo Norway” are, in fact, by the hands of Bjorn Engo (these are not mass produced). Only four years later in 1957, Engo won a Gold Medal for his enameling at the Triennale di Milano. He maintained his enamel studio throughout his career – 1950s to 1970s. In 1956 Engo started to design his famous line of anodized aluminum for Emalox in the district of Ryen in Oslo, Norway, which he continued to refine and change well into the 1960s. It was in 1967 that the Engo received the Norwegian Priis for Good Design for his Grey Line of Emalox. It should also be noted that Engo was a fabric designer for Sandvika Veveri as well as lighting designs for Arnold Wiigs Fabrikker. In addition, he received numerous commissions for large-scale public artworks which he created from various metals and enamels. Examples of Engo’s work are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris, and the Melbourne Museum in Victoria, Australia, as well as many other museums and private collections.
