This scarce rare Antique Jumbo elephant steel sign was created for the 50th anniversary of his death by St. Thomas Metal Signs (1935). It is 24" L x 33 1/2 W (tail to tip of trunk). Weight is approximately 4lbs. This sign is in Very goodcondition for a vintage sign from 1935, with normal weathering, and marks that only add to its very unique character. The edges are slightly rolled and it has an original wood backing for reinforcement. SA 13188 051824 1980.
From Wiki.:Jumbo (b. ~1860) wasorphaned by hunters in what is now Eritrea and was eventually sold to the ParisZoo in 1863, and then to the London Zoo in 1865. He was the first male Africanelephant to be exhibited in Europe.His lifelong trainer and companion wasMatthew Scott.He began exhibiting violent behaviors in the early 1880s,destroying his enclosure.P.T. Barnum bought Jumbo from the zoo for 2000pounds to be used in his travelling circus. Matthew Scott went with jumbo andwas hired by Barnum.Jumbo became the circus' star attraction andtravelled all over the eastern USA and Canada, in his own railway car.Hewas killed by a freight train on Sept. 15, 1885, while being taken down thetrack of the Grand Trunk Railway. Jumbo tried to outrun the train but wascaught and crushed against the side of a circus train boxcar.His deathdrew a huge crowd. A taxidermist arrived to skin Jumbo and clean his bones,both of which were then exhibited. His stomach was also cut-open and revealed severalstrange items inside (English pennies, keys, rivets, and a police whistle). Jumbobecame a household name and was used on many products.
