We purchased these two handmade Havasupai round baskets from the makers in 1981 while we lived and worked in Supai, the Havasupai village located at the bottom of Cataract Canyon, part of the Grand Canyon. The late Florence Marshall, a highly skilledbasket makerknown for her intricate artisanship, made the larger basket (2-1/2” high, 4” wide mouth). Florence’swork contributed significantly to Havasupai basketmaking during the first half of the twentieth century. We visited Florence’s home many times and purchased baskets from her. The smaller basket(2” high, 3-3.4” wide mouth) was made by Flossie Wescogame (1921 – 1999). We purchased a few baskets from Flossie during our time in Supai. Both baskets are excellent examples of Havasupai basket making and have lovely patinas. Both talented basket weavers have had their work displayed at the Heard Museum, the Museum of Northern Arizona, and at the Grand Canyon. They are both listed in the Heard Museum Native American Artists Resource Collection. Florence and Flosssie collected willow (salix) along Havasu Creek for weaving and they used devil’s claw (parviflora) for the black designs on their baskets. These rare one-of-a-kind baskets are evenly woven and are in very good condition. It is extremely rare that one of Florence’s or Flossie’s baskets are offered for sale! Florence and Flossie lived their entire lives in Supai, a village thatis possibly the most remote Native American community in the USA. We had an 8-mile hike from “hilltop,” the location where the trail begins atop the canyon, to the village. Mail came down the trail via donkeys.
