Jennie Laate(1933-1994)was a master Zuni potter respected for reviving Zuni Pueblo pottery traditions through her teaching pottery making at Zuni High School, helping develop a new generation of potters after the number of potters had dwindled.In 1979, Jennie was the only artist offering Zuni pottery at the world-renowned Santa Fe Indian Market.Cathy and I obtained several clay creations from Jennie during visits to her home during the 1980s when we were living and working at Zuni Pueblo. We obtained this miniature heartline deer pot with traditional Zuni geometric patterns. The potfeatures terracotta and black patterns along with black top and bottom rims on a creamy white bisque background.Jennie’s pottery creations are in private collections and museums around the globe.
