Before 1897, on the island of Hachijojima in Japan, bullfighting events were held twice a year, during the summer \"Obon Festival\" and the autumn \"Fifteenth Night Festival.

Missing Letters
This item is a wooden carving of a fighting bull that my family purchased in Hachijojima, Japan, in 1976. In preparing for this listing, I researched past sales records but was unable to find any information on the sales history of wooden carvings of fighting bulls from Hachijojima. What makes this wooden carving of a fighting bull even more interesting is the unique composition of the characters for \"Hachijojima.\" Typically, the characters \'丈\' and \'島\' form a repeated pair, but in this sculpture, only the character \'八\' is composed as a single character. This suggests the possibility of an error in the composition of the characters in the carving, further enhancing its rarity and making it seem exceptionally unusual.

Very Good Condition
