VINTAGE 1970's (IN THE MANNER OF MARCELINO VICENTE) MEXICAN OCUMICHO

This rare vintage folk art terra-cotta sculpture of a Nativity Scene is from the village of Ocumicho, Mexico. Purchased in the early 1970’s in Mexico at the Fonart Museum

Nativity scene is of a priest, a peasant, a newborn child ( umbilical cord still attached) laying in a bed of straw with 2 sheep and 3 birds in attendance. Colors are muted and beautiful.

Condition: some minor paint and glaze losses throughout but otherwise in good to very good vintage condition - wear commensurate with age. Crack in central bird tail that lwasthere almost50 years ago when I purchased.

Measures 10” tall x 9” wide x 5” deep

This rare vintage ceramic nativity sculpture is from the village of Ocumicho Mexico, where in the 1960s a man named Marcelino Vicente created his own genre of folk-art. While his life was tragically cut short in 1968, his work was emulated by other artists there who continued his style to this day. This piece is clearly from his day due to the colors used in the piece, new work from Ocumicho is painted with acrylic paints that are obviously newer. Marcelino Vicente never signed his pieces so we'll never know which ones he made, but he specialized in devils, so this nativity was most likely made by one of his followers.
