Vintage 1960\'s Yorkraft Wooden Tavern Sign, Silent Woman Entertainment, made of wood with wire hanger on back. Yorkraft, out of York, PA, produced a series of these signs in the 60\'s paying homage to old tavern signs from early Americana. The Silent Woman was a bar in the 1760\'s in Massachusetts, and this is a replica of the sign that hung outside the bar.
From Yorkraft literature on these signs when they came out in the 1960\'s:
‘Tavern Signs of Early America\'Hanging outside each Inn, Tavern and Shop, in 17th and early 18th century America, there was usually a colorful sign-board whose particular symbol gave the place identity. - Hence they were called simply-Black Horse-Lion Eagle-Ship-etc. Some signs were the work of leading artists of the day, but most were by itinerant painters. Taken from old sign-boards and reduced in size; these unique Tavern Signs make an amusing, fascinating decoration for playroom, guest room, hallway or office.’
This one belonged to my stepfather (1923-2011) and has been hanging in my parents\' homes for at least the last 50 years. It is in very good conditions for an item of its age (no warping cracking, etc.).
The low price relative to other similar items is simply due to the fact that profit is not the motivation. We are clearing out the house and just trying to get useful things to a good home.
