This is a ribbon from the 1884 World\'s Fair in New Orleans with the embroidered image of then President Chester Arthur. The was a souvenir from the Fair that ran from1884-1885 and was done to promote the cotton industry and to bring notice that New Orleans had finally shaken off the Civil War, Union occupation and reconstruction. It is in wonderful condition considering that it is 140 years old. I am not sure what the fabric is but the embroidery thread feels very fine and the colors are still vibrant. Some discoloring can be seen in some of the ribbon especially at the top and lower edges where the ribbon was folded to create the V shape. There are also two small separations at the lower end where it may have been folded as well. I have seen others with tassels attached at the lower end but sadly this does not have one.
