Original & HistoricVietnam War USAF Service Visor Hat \'LTC James Bickford\' WW2 Fighter Ace RCAF RAF; Lieutenant Colonel James Wendell Bickford (b. 19 Mar 1915 - d. 19 Dec 1986) Who Served in WWII, Korea, & Vietnam with both Royal Canadian Air Force & Royal Air Force for 33 months 1939 - 1943 and The United States Army Air Forces 52nd Fighter Group Remaining in the Air Force Thereafter, Excerpt from Obituary (several articles including the obituary found below) \"He had been in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1939 until transferring to the U.S. Air Force on June 16, 1943. Until October 1, 1966, he served with the United States AirForce. He retired on that date with the rank of Lt. Col.

His last assignment was with Headquarters Air DefenseCommand in Colorado Springs where he was assigned to the Aerospace SupportDivision, Directorate of Operations.

He served in the European and Middle East theaters duringWorld War II as a fighter pilot.

After the war his assignments included tours in Alaska andJapan, the Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base, Otis AFB, Mass. and SeniorAir Force advisor with the Vermont Air National Guard.

Bickford transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corps in June of1943 after serving 33 months with the Royal Canadian Air Force where he flewHurricanes and Spitfires in England and the Middle East with both RCAF and RAFUnits.

He left England in April 1942 for assignment in Egypt wherehis unit supported the British 8th Army during the campaign against GeneralRommel across the Libyan Desert to Tunis.

He transferred to U.S. Forces upon completion of thatcampaign.

Bickford was born in Clearfield, Pa. and attended publicschools in that city. For several years prior to joining the RCAF in 1939 he had managed retail dairy stores in that area.

Obituary from the Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegraph,Colorado Springs, Colorado, Dec. 31, 1986, Wednesday, p. 14:

James W. Bickford, 71, of Colorado Springs died Dec. 19 athome.

He retired as a lieutenant colonel from the Air Force in1966.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Air ForceAcademy Community Chapel with Chaplain Reynolds officiating. Cremation isplanned.

Mr. Bickford was born March 19, 1915, in Clearfield, Pa., toGuy W. and Myra (Wall) Bickford. He had been a Colorado Springs resident since1963.

He had been in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1939 untiltransferring to the U.S. Air Force on June 16, 1943. He was an ace fighterpilot and received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Croix de Guerre with agold star and the World War II Victory Medal.

He is survived by a son, Mark M. of Woodland Park, and asister, Linda Ross of Curwensville, Pa.

Personnel Service Firm to Open on Bijou Street

Stanford National Personnel Service, Inc. will open a new office in the Scurr-Messenger Building at 2818 East Bijou St. Monday.

James W. Bickford, owner and president, reports that the company will offer complete service to all employers and personnel desiring employment.

Free counseling will be available to job applicants along with testing in many career fields.

Both permanent and temporary job placement service will be provided.

In addition, complete resume service will be available for those individuals desiring to prepare a resume for prospective employers.

Bickford stated that a highly qualified and experienced staff is available to provide counseling and determine aptitude and skill of applicants. This, he emphasized, serves the best interest of both applicant and employee.

In addition to the normal testing program, Bickford advised that special tests desired by prospective employers will be administered to applicants free of charge as an added service.

Bickford, his wife Joan, and son Mark, have resided in Colorado Springs at 4126 Tumbleweed Dr. for the past three and one-half years.
