He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Virginia Military Institute in 1968, and a Master of Science in operations research, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, 1972. He graduated from the United States Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, 1988. He was commissioned Second lieutenant United States Army, 1968, advanced through grades to lieutenant colonel, 1984. Served in Vietnam; commander tank company 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, 1976-1978. Exchange officer British Royal Armour School, Bovington, England, 1978-1979. Operations research analyst United States Army Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 1979-1981. Battalion executive officer 4th Battalion, 64th Armor, Aschaffenburg, Federal Republic Germany, 1982-1983. Director operations 7th Army Training Command, Grafenwoehr, Federal Republic Germany, 1983-1985. Commander tank battalion 4th Battalion, 64th Armor, Fort Stewart, Georgia, 1985-1987. Deputy commander 194th Armored Brigade, Fort Knox, Kentucky, until 1987.
