BIO:Colonel Charles “Chuck” DeBellevue is America’s Top Ace Pilots from the VietnamWar. Colonel DeBellevue is a recipient of the following top militarydecorations: Air Force Cross Recipient (2nd highest military decoration), 3Silver Stars (3rd highest military decoration in United Statesmilitary), 2 Legion of Merit, 6 Distinguished Flying Crosses.Hebecame the first US Air Force weapons systems officer (WSO) to become an ACE.In 1971, he was sent to the famed 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron at UdornRoyal Thai Air Base. As a WSO with the “Triple Nickel,” DeBellevue scored sixaerial victories over North Vietnamese MiGs. He gained the first of his fourvictories while crewed with Steve Ritchie, who became the first US Air Forceace over Vietnam. DeBellevue became the second Air Force ace when he downed twoMiGs on 9 September 1972. Shortly after engaging the enemy fliers, DeBellevueand pilot, John Madden, “Olds 1,” merged with two MiG-19 Farmers. The first MiG-19was downed shortly after the merge with two heat-seeking Raytheon AIM-9Sidewinder missiles. Following an intense visual engagement at over 9 G’s, thesecond MiG-19 was hit with another AIM-9. After the second MiG crashed,extremely thick anti-aircraft fire filled the sky. Short on fuel, “Olds” flightegresses for safety. Altogether, DeBellevue logged 550 combat hours whileflying 220 combat missions, 96 of which were over North Vietnam. Charles DeBellevue received his commissionthrough the Air Force ROTC program at the University of Southwestern Louisianain 1968. During the Vietnam War he became the first Air Force navigator tobecome an ACE and was credited with shooting down a total of SIX enemyaircraft. He was one of only THREE Vietnam War Air Force ACEs (along with fellowAFC recipients Captain Jeffrey Feinstein and Captain Steve Ritchie.) He was thehighest-scoring ACE of the war and the last American ACE on Active Duty when heretired as an Air Force Colonel on February 1, 1998.

ThePresident of the United States of America, authorized by Title 10, Section8742, United States Code, takes pleasure in presenting the Air Force Cross toCaptain Charles B. DeBellevue (AFSN: 0-3210693), United States Air Force, forextraordinary heroism in military operations against an opposing armed force asan F-4D Weapon Systems Officer in the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron, UdornRoyal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action on 9 September 1972. On thatdate, while protecting a large strike force attacking a high priority targetdeep in hostile territory, Captain DeBellevue engaged and destroyed a hostileaircraft. Through superior judgment and use of aircraft capabilities, and incomplete disregard for his own safety, Captain DeBellevue was successful indestroying his fifth hostile aircraft, a North Vietnamese MiG-19. Through hisextraordinary heroism, superb airmanship, and aggressiveness in the face of theenemy, Captain DeBellevue reflected the highest credit upon himself and theUnited States Air Force.
