This photogravure of Victor Hugo was made prior to 1894. The photogravure was made by Groupil & Company to be bound into the book "Great Men and Famous Women" of that period. It is very clear and clean.

The Eastlake deep well frame was made circa 1880 and is a remarkable piece on its own. The frame photographs well but please look closely as it does show patina and flaws of its age and as you can see, the gold inner frame has issues. Frame is original and not messed with. Original imperfect glass and wooden back. Frame dimensions 15 in by 13 in overall with opening for 8 in by 10 in image. the photogravure is beautiful.

Victor Hugo was a French Romantic writer and politician. During a literary career that spanned more than sixty years, he wrote in a variety of genres and forms.

His most famous works are the novels The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831) and Les Misérables (1862). In France, Hugo is renowned for his poetry collections, such as Les Contemplations (The Contemplations) and La Légende des siècles (The Legend of the Ages). Hugo was at the forefront of the Romantic literary movement with his play Cromwell and drama Hernani. Many of his works have inspired music, both during his lifetime and after his death, including the opera Rigoletto and the musicals Les Misérables and Notre-Dame de Paris. He produced more than 4,000 drawings in his lifetime, and campaigned for social causes such as the abolition of capital punishment and slavery.
