This was his maternal grandparent's home on West Tinmouth Road that subsequently passed to his mother. In the 1940's Noel acquired the home from her. This is the Joseph Warren Potter House that can be seen in the Homes collection. There is also an entry History of the Joseph Warren Potter House in the Documents collection written by then 7th grader Brian Doherty whose parents had bought the house in 1983 from Noel's estate.
Growing up Noel lived in NYC, Connecticut, and then Boston. He served in France during WWI with the US Tank Corps. He obtained a BA degree at Boston University followed by a BS degree at Temple University, a Masters at the Univ. of Pennsylvania, and then a PHD at the Univ. of Pennsylvania. Most of his career was as a professor in the Economics and Business Administration Dept at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. In addition to his teaching duties Noel was active on multiple fronts and frequently appeared in the newspaper accounts. The article below from the April 6, 1982 Lancaster New Era was a tribute to him outlining the many organizations and activities in which he was involved. In the early days of WWII Noel served as head of a group of instructors for the 1200 air raid wardens that were being organized in Pennsylvania, the country at the time not knowing if the war would come to the US mainland. His Citizens Defense Corps efforts went on to include simulated tests of various attack scenarios. The Jan. 30, 1943 Intelligencer Journal (Lancaster, PA) article at the very bottom talks about one of those simulations he ran. In May 1943 he was commissioned Captain in the Army Specialist Reserve Corps. He retired from the Reserves as a Lt. Colonel in 1955. His parents were Raymond Gilchrist Laird (1868 - 1943) and Huldah Blanche Potter ( 1872 - 1959). He had been named after his grandfather Noel Potter (1841 - 1898) who had died 3 months before Noel Potter Laird was born. Noel was descended of both the East Tinmouth Road and West Tinmouth Road Potter families through his maternal grandparents Noel Potter (1841 - 1898) and Lydia (Potter) Potter (1841 - 1924). That Noel and Lydia were only extremely distantly related in their Potter lines. In 1930 Noel married Nina Beyer (1903 - 1992). They are buried in the Chippenhook Cemetery. Noel & Nina had one daughter, Nina Ruth Laird (1935 - 2017) who married Donald Vogtman (1934 - 1980) in the Brick Church in Clarendon Flats in 1956. Noel also had a daughter Virginia Laird Taylor (1922 - 2007) with Ida Mildred Taylor (1900 - 1947) that was raised in Maine by her maternal grandparents.
