BACKGROUND

Nubian unique handicrafts are intricately woven with fascinating artistic patterns and rich colors that dazzle the eye and considered to be a world-class item.

They\'re used to serve meals and keep food warm in Nubian homes. The patterns are well thought out and calculated. Nubian grandmothers were expected to weave a new set every week and their husbands could tell if their food was served in the same Kuta and Tabaga as the previous week. This kept the women busy when they weren\'t involved in other chores. But with that developed a skill and an expertise than can only leave one in awe.

When not in use, they can be hung on the wall or displayed anywhere as a beautiful decoration for the house.

The Kuta and Tabaga are gifted to every new bride and are also considered a valuable gift for friends and family.

Woven by Nubian women of Darfur, Sudan, these baskets of peace, hope, and strength represent the people’s inspiring courage and resolve.

Over the years, the people of Darfur have been displaced by conflict, war, building of the Aswan Dam and other factors. They have resettled in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and other nearby countries.

These coil-stitched baskets are created using the most difficult weaving techniques, tightly wrapping smooth palm leaves around coils of papyrus stalks. This process requires skill and experience to keep the inner coil at the right thickness while stitching the outer wrap over the coil with a needle.

These traditional baskets are delicately woven to feature distinctive bright colors, intricate patterns, a tight weave, and thin coils. Water based dyes are used to dye the reeds into various brilliant colors such as red, yellow, green and black. The palm leaves give a sheen to the surface of the baskets.
