Vintage large sterlingsilver (approx. 1 5/8\" tall with rotating bale; weight approx. 3.5 g)Christian Cross pendant featuringornate design with the scallop shell motif, a symbol of baptism since atleast 12th century, incorporated into the crossbar ends.Once pouring water was theaccepted mode for baptizing, the shell became a handy accessory. The scallop shellwas also a pilgrim symbol and an emblem of St. James the Apostle, whose shrineis a famed place of pilgrimage. It is also one of the symbols associated withSt. Augustine who had a vision of a child (believed to be Christ) who told himthat he could sooner empty the ocean with a shell than understand the HolyTrinity.The large soldered jump ring of the pendant bears two punch marks, one of which displays the \"925\" hallmark indicating the \"sterling\" purity.The pendant has vintage appearance withsigns ofwear and aging including deformations of its original shape, scratches, dents, andpatches of silver patina or discoloration.
